It’s What the Air Feels Like Now
How does change breed repetition?
We find the love of elderly
Couples charming, like the friendships
Made quickly among small children.
Isn’t that sweet? The grown-ups say,
The in-between ages who know
Nothing, for them, is enchanting.
Isn’t that sweet? Adults repeat.
How has change bred repetition?
Back in the meadow at morning,
And it is still spring, and the birds
Are still singing the calls by which
We identify their species.
The days arrive reliably.
New children make friends easily.
Rare old couples talk comfortably.
Every blade of grass is unique
In unusually strong breezes.
